(SOME SPOILERS) The Villany of Galrath and One Ranger's Story
Well I was fresh out of refund points, and I needed to mess with my skills some (after changing from an R/E to R/N in crystal desert), and since I had it in my log still, I figured I'd do Villany of Galrath. So I found a pickup group in Temple of Ages, all went pretty well until we got to the first waves of Verata's Apprentices. Some of us died, rezzed again, tried fighting some more, but eventually, we all died and got kicked back to the spawn point at the beginning of the zone. We ran back, discussed some ideas, and decided that we'd just take out the sage (he was slowing everyone with Imagined Burden) and then run for the boss and kill him before we died. Took out the sage, we were about 3 men down by then, and ran for the boss. We got a couple shots off before being brutally murdered. But as the 10 second rez clock ticked down, I saw something funny...apparently Verata's Apprentices weren't very fond of Galrath and his minions, and they started taking shots at each other. All the better, we'd be able to peg Galrath while they were still duking it out. So about 100 feet from the spawn point it says "Quest Updated: The Villany of Galrath." Yep. Verata's Apprentices KILLED Galrath for us.

LOL if only it were always that easy. I need to do the mission myself but have not even tried it yet. Sure could use that 4000exp though.

the quest isnt very hard, except for verata's group of lackeys of course, if you go past them right away, you can kill galrath quickly and then getted killed by the minions when your done

This sounds stupid, but I found a somewhat easy way to do this quest:
(Assumes you've fought thru to the Verata group)
Pass 1: circle around ALL the way to the east. Attack and aggro EVERYBODY, but pull them as far east as possible before dying.
Pass 2: rez, run in on west. With luck, you can avoid all Verata groups, who are still mostly to the east.
Worked amazingly well, and killing Galrath with -15% is no sweat.

I did it the hard way with my monk. Picked up lots of henchies from Temple of Ages, then travelled off to do Villainy.
Got to -60DP, along with the rest of my party and found we could still take out at least one of the critturs at the end.
As the DP can't get any worse than 60, rinse and repeat, one monster at a time until they're all dead.
Took a lot of patience, but never been in a PUG that's managed this quest.

The big thing with Galrath is its almost impossible to annihilate Verata's minions. You can get the first group lead by the mesmer boss near the bottom of the slope, but forget about the group consisting of Eyes of Verata (Rangers) and Apprentices of Verata, as the Eyes have a huge height advantage, fire quickly, and tend to focus fire and tear things apart. Furthermore, once something dies, the apprentices make a level 17 bone fiend out of it, which not only contributes to killing you, but is basically a free full heal for any of the Apprentices thanks to Taste of Death.
The best way I've found to do it is similar to what was mentioned. Pull them as far away as possible and distract them long enough to let a few people slip by and kill Galrath. This works pretty well if said sneaky persons are carrying Rebirth and can drag your whole team back up with them. There's also the whole running Galrath and his cronies into the Apprentices which the OP just mentioned, which looks both doable and amusing.
Great story, by the way.

I did it all with henchies (at lvl 20, though no Droknar armor yet).
I even managed to wipe out every single monster on the map, including Verata's minions.
And got a superior absorption rune to boot:P

I managed to beat this quest at level 15 with henchmen. I got to the first group of Verata people no problem. However during the fight with them I ended up dying along with most of my henchmen. But somehow three henchmen we still standing against 3 or 4 of the Veratas and they managed to kill them one at a time (including a boss) and eventually resurrect the party. I snuck past all other Veratas and killed Galrath no problem. I guess I got lucky. My first time doing the quest and I only died once.

The group I was in completely annihilated and owned that quest easily. I was the only warrior tank and the rest of the group composed of rangers and elementalists with 2 Mo/E for the heals. This was with only 2 level 20s and that was a really really good group. I guess it depends on your group

Even without doing this quest, you'll be level 20 in no time. My advice...skip it until you're with Droknar's armor.
Start from Temple of Ages as you get to have 8 people in the party.

Me (D Shay - Monk) and my mate (Bellamin Silentall - Ele) did this full quest with no problems. Patience and good communication is all you need.
